Welcome Most of us would admit to knowing relatively little about Finland, aside from stating the obvious: it has a very cold climate, it shares a boarder with Russia and, along with the multitudes of reindeer, it is the home of a certain Father Christmas. Even in these days of ambitious international travel, relatively few Britons are making Finland the centre of their holiday plans. But when John Murolo and his wife Celia first ventured there on holiday fifteen years ago, spending the New Year in the capital, Helsinki, they quickly became smitten by the country’s staggering scenery, it’s charming and unique culture and the warm and welcoming people they found perched at the very top of Northern Europe. Finland after all means ‘the end of the land’, and for the Murolo’s this exquisite, unspoilt territory, with its sweeping pine forests and labyrinthine lakes and inlets, was well worth the journey. Elks Don Not Speak English is the story of their love affair with Finalnd. |
